Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, is experiencing a rapid increase in water demand due to population growth. The Addis Ababa Water and Sewerage Authority (AAWSA), which is responsible for the city’s water supply business, has begun development of new water sources and construction of a water treatment plant to meet the rapidly growing water demand, with the goal of reducing the non-revenue water ratio (the percentage of water delivered from the water treatment plant that is not charged for) to 20% for the entire city. However, due to population growth that has exceeded projections, the city is unable to meet its water demand as of 2020. This cooperation will strengthen AAWSA’s ability to implement and manage non-revenue water measures to meet the tightening water demand by effectively utilizing existing water resources through non-revenue water measures, thereby contributing to more efficient water utility management.
