NEXCO Central Japan, in collaboration with Concrete Coring and Toa Road Works, will develop a technology to repair brittle areas deep from the road surface without excavating the pavement.
In recent years, there has been an increasing trend toward damage in the deeper layers of the pavement (upper and lower roadbeds) where fatigue cracks develop in the roadbed due to a combination of factors such as traffic loading, pavement bearing capacity degradation, and water intrusion, which causes sedimentation and permanent deformation of the roadbed.
Replacing the pavement, including the upper layers, would require long lane control time and cost a lot of money. The new technology developed this time allows pavement repair before the extent of pavement damage expands as preventive maintenance by injecting cement or asphalt material from the road surface with an injection tool into the weakened deeper layers.
For the time being, the project targets the repair of partial damage, with the goal of completing development by the end of FY2023.
