On May 27, JICA Special Advisor Shinichi Kitaoka met with President Prithviraj Singh Lupin of the Republic of Mauritius during his visit.
Special Advisor Kitaoka praised the natural beauty of Mauritius and introduced that he himself was heartbroken when the cargo ship WAKASHIO ran aground and spilled oil in 2020, and that JICA also provided maximum cooperation. He also stated that sharing Japan’s experience in modernization can contribute to solving problems in developing countries, and explained that the JICA Chair (Support Program for the Establishment of Japanese Studies Chair) is being undertaken for this purpose.
In response, President Lupin expressed his gratitude for Japan’s prompt assistance during the stranding and oil spill incident, and his agreement with the importance of sharing Japan’s experience.
We also exchanged views on deepening the future-oriented and cooperative relationship between Mauritius and Japan.
