Tajikistan is a landlocked country with 93% of its land area mountainous, with no outlet to seaports and underdeveloped air transportation, so 90% of transportation of people and goods is done by land. Therefore, in the country’s transportation sector, the construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of transportation infrastructure is an important development goal. In particular, many of the approximately 2,200 bridges on the roads managed by the Ministry of Transportation (total length: 14,200 km) were constructed during the Soviet era, and have deteriorated due to lack of proper maintenance and management, as well as civil war and economic stagnation after independence in 1991 and the absence of bridge maintenance and management engineers.
In addition to the transfer of technology related to bridge maintenance and management, this cooperation will strengthen the bridge maintenance and management capacity of related organizations and contribute to the implementation of systematic bridge maintenance and management by developing an implementation system and human resource development system.
