Segway’s EV scooter “Segway B110S” is now available for pre-sale on Makuake. I took it for a spin! Maximum speed 38km/h, cruising range 67km

On July 8, Otomo launched a pre-order campaign on Makemake to commemorate the introduction of the Segway brand EV scooter “Segway B110S” in Japan. The campaign will run from July 8, 14:00 to August 30, 18:00.

The Segway B110S is a Segway-branded EV scooter manufactured by Segway-Ninebot, and can be driven with a Japanese moped class 1 license. The Segway B110S’s keyless entry system, Airlock, eliminates the need for a key, and its advanced security system and long range of approximately 67 km are key features of the Segway B110S. The specifications of the Segway B110S are as follows: the rated motor output is 570W, which is lower than the European specifications, and the maximum speed is 38km/h, in order to make it a Japanese class 1 moped.

The planned general sales price is 437,800 yen, and Makuake is offering an early bird discount of 32% off, 24% off, and more.

When actually riding the car, one can feel the torquey feeling that is typical of EVs, both when starting off and when accelerating. Considering the ease with which it can be ridden with a moped license and the wide range of users, it is powerful enough to make one feel that it would be better if it were a little gentler when starting off. The maximum hill climbing angle is 15 degrees (approx. 27%), which is more than sufficient for daily use. The EV also has the advantage of running almost silently in residential areas in the early morning.

Another feature is the ease with which the scooter can be unlocked when a smartphone authenticated by a dedicated app gets close, and the scooter can be quickly started by simply pressing the main switch. Of course, the scooter automatically locks when the user moves away. The scooter will turn on and go into standby mode when the user’s body is off the seat or the stand is in the upright position, but it will not start even if the accelerator is turned.

Incidentally, even without this authenticated smartphone, driving can be done without problems by touching the supplied NFC key card to the meter display or by entering the passcode into the main unit. However, considering the use of the security system described below, it is recommended to use authentication by a dedicated app to take advantage of the ease of use and anti-theft security of the Segway B110S. The app also allows the user to check more detailed data such as remaining battery level, available range, and trip record.

Because this model is characterized by the ease of use and ease of getting on and off the bike, it has a wide range of measures to prevent theft, which is a concern. First of all, the system will not accept any operations unless an authorized smartphone is in close proximity. This is the basics. In addition, when the scooter is away from the vehicle, information is sent to the smartphone in real time if there is any vibration or movement of the vehicle body, and if the vehicle is moved in any way, the location can be confirmed by GPS tracking. In addition, in the event of an unusual fall or severe collision while riding, the location information can be sent via short message to family members or other emergency contacts registered in advance in the application.

These systems built into the vehicle cannot be removed, and the various security systems are always active even when the battery is disconnected.

Charging can be done either by connecting the cable directly to the vehicle itself or by disconnecting the battery and charging it indoors or in any other desired location. The battery weighs 11.6 kg and can be charged in 4 hours for a 100% charge or 3 hours for an 80% charge using a dedicated 100-240 V charger. The special battery can be easily removed, but to prevent battery theft, the battery and vehicle combination is registered in advance, so that the battery cannot be used in a different vehicle, even if it is the same model. Even if you try to use it, the vehicle itself will be locked and you will not be able to drive.

The Segway B110S to be introduced in Japan will come in two body colors: black and orange. While the chic black color is a pop appearance, the orange color is a combination of three colors: light gray, orange, and black.
