Casio Computer Co., Ltd. will release on August 5 the PRG-340, an outdoor watch “PRO TREK” made of biomass plastic and featuring a large graphic display of the direction by means of a dual-layer LCD. The price is 29,700 yen.
Committed to the development of environmentally friendly products, the case, caseback, band, and rotating bezel are made of biomass plastic, which contains components extracted from castor seeds and corn. By using materials derived from renewable organic resources as raw materials, CO2 emissions are reduced. The bezel, which is more prone to impact than other parts, is made of a newly developed stronger biomass plastic. The watch is also equipped with Tough Solar, which means that it is powered by a small amount of light, such as fluorescent light, eliminating the need for periodic battery replacement.
Furthermore, for ease of use in outdoor activities such as mountain climbing and trekking, the lower LCD of the double-layered top-and-bottom structure displays the time and measured values, while the upper LCD displays a large blue graphic of azimuth. The bezel is rotatable, so it can be used as a simple azimuth memory. It also features movable lugs that can be laid flat to allow the user to check the current location and target direction while using it in conjunction with a divine map. Each button is coated with a non-slip coating, so that even when wearing gloves, the user can measure azimuth, barometric pressure/temperature, and altitude with a single push of a button.
