Waste Management Improvement Plan in Juba

Posted on 2022-08-022022-08-02 by News Admin

Juba City, the capital of South Sudan, has experienced significant population growth since gaining independence in 2011, and the amount of general waste generated is expected to increase significantly from the estimated level in 2020 (approximately 430 tons/day). Due to the repeated riots and the resulting financial difficulties, the city has a serious shortage of waste management equipment. The city’s waste collection rate is estimated to be about 10 percent. The final disposal facilities and heavy equipment have also been destroyed, resulting in uncontrolled and unregulated open dumping. Uncollected waste is improperly disposed of by burning it in the open or dumping it in rivers, and there are concerns about the deterioration of the sanitary environment and health hazards, especially in low-income neighborhoods. This cooperation will strengthen the city’s waste management capacity by providing the equipment and heavy machinery necessary for waste collection, transportation, and final disposal, and will contribute to the steady enforcement of waste management laws and regulations by establishing a proper and sustainable waste management system by the local government.
