The Government of Pakistan has positioned the development of transportation infrastructure as one of the key elements in supporting economic growth. National Highway 70 is a key route connecting Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, and Multan, a major city in the southern part of Punjab, from east to west, and is responsible for transporting coal and other mining products and agricultural products. The section of the route (approx. 34 km) is located in a mountainous area, and because of its narrow road width, steepness, and sharp curves, large vehicles are unable to pass through the route and are forced to divert to other routes. Road maintenance in steep mountainous areas, which is the target section of this project, is technically challenging, and Japanese construction techniques are expected to be used for road maintenance. This cooperation will improve access between Balochistan and Punjab and contribute to the development of the regional economy by rehabilitating a 34-km mountainous section of National Highway 70 and eliminating traffic bottlenecks.
