President Tanaka Visits the U.S.: Meets with the World Bank, IMF, and Related Institutions

JICA President Akihiko Tanaka visited the United States from September 12 to 16.

During his visit, Mr. Malpass met with World Bank Group President David Malpass, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) President Mauricio Clavercarone, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Samantha Power, and USAID Chief Operating Officer Agnes Daschwitz. (USDFC) Chief Operating Officer. He also exchanged views with Professor Jean-Marie Guénot of Columbia University’s School of International and Public Policy, and participated in a roundtable hosted by the Brookings Institution.

During the meeting with World Bank President Malpass, we exchanged views on the response to the complex crisis caused by the war in Ukraine in addition to the pandemic of the new coronavirus, and shared recognition of the importance of development agencies working together to guide recovery from the crisis and economic growth. In particular, they exchanged views on support for the food crisis, debt issues, and reconstruction assistance to Ukraine, and agreed to promote collaboration.

With IMF Managing Director Georgieva, we exchanged views on the prospects of the complex crisis and its impact on developing countries, debt issues, climate change, and other issues. Ms. Georgieva expressed her expectations for cooperation in the field of climate change and disaster prevention, where Japan has an advantage. Both sides also confirmed their commitment to stabilizing the economies of developing countries through cooperation in capacity-building assistance.

In the meeting with IDB President Clavercarone, we reviewed the results of collaboration between JICA and the IDB in Latin America and the Caribbean, and confirmed that we will continue to contribute to development issues in the region through co-financing and private sector support.

He and USAID Administrator Power exchanged views on a wide range of issues, including Ukraine, Africa, cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, climate change, quality infrastructure investment, and democracy assistance, in addition to Sri Lanka and Pakistan, which the Administrator visited the previous week.

During the meeting with USDFC Chief Operating Officer Daschwitz, we reviewed our past achievements in co-financing and confirmed that we will work to strengthen our collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region, which is USDFC’s priority region, and continue to exchange information on priority sectors and regions.

Professor Gheno and I discussed the situation in African countries and our analysis of the future developments in Ukraine. We also exchanged views on the political and economic conditions necessary to achieve peace and stability, the importance of effectively demonstrating the significance of peace, and other important elements for the promotion of democracy.

The Brookings Institution’s roundtable exchanged ideas with experts on how the international community should respond and cooperate to recover from the complex crises and achieve the SDGs.
