In Rwanda, it is reported that rural water supply facilities are not fully operational, and the access rate to safe water in rural areas is only less than 60%. In addition, the technical capacity of many water supply entities is low, and the low availability of water supply facilities is believed to be due to weak operation and maintenance systems.
Japan has implemented a technical cooperation project, the “Project for Strengthening Operation and Maintenance of Rural Water Supply Facilities” (2015-2019), targeting eastern provinces with particularly low water supply rates in Rwanda, and has achieved results, including the development of new national guidelines and manuals for the operation and maintenance of rural water supply.
Furthermore, this cooperation will contribute to strengthening the capacity for planning and implementation of rural water supply services throughout the country by strengthening the capacity for operation and maintenance of rural water supply facilities, planning for expansion and renewal of water supply facilities, and management of springs as a community water source.
