I got on the newly debuted West Kyushu Shinkansen right away! Face-to-face transfer of “Kamome” and “Relay Kamome” at Takeo Onsen Station Nagasaki Station to Hakata Station in about 1 hour and 20 minutes at the fastest

Nagasaki Station moved to the west side with the elevated station In fact, changes have been occurring at Nagasaki Station since before the opening of the West Kyushu Shinkansen Line. The station, which had been above ground, was moved to the west side as it was elevated in a multi-leveling project, and a new elevated station was put into service on March 28, 2020. To the east of the station, the Nagasaki Station of the West Kyushu Shinkansen Line was built. As a result, Nagasaki Station, which was previously located just in front of Route 202, was moved away to the west. Currently, the site of Nagasaki Station from the above-ground era is still in the process of being cleared, and redevelopment will begin in earnest in the future. If you arrive at Nagasaki Station by bus or streetcar, please note that it takes about 5 to 10 minutes on foot to get to Nagasaki Station. I am a fast walker and it took me less than 5 minutes, but it would probably take longer if you are carrying a large baggage or have children with you.

The “Kamome” and “Relay Kamome” trains connect at Takeo Onsen Station. Since trains line up on both sides of the same platform at Takeo Onsen Station, there are no stairs or escalators to move up and down when transferring between Shinkansen and conventional lines. Unlike other transfer stations, there is no intermediate ticket gate and passengers can transfer directly between the Shinkansen and conventional lines. I will write a separate article on how this system was made possible. When the “Kamome No. 88” arrived at Takeo Onsen Station, the “Relay Kamome No. 88” had not yet arrived, but arrived a little later. This makes the time required to board the train more difficult, but rest assured that the train will not depart until all passengers have boarded the train. On the other hand, for Nagasaki-bound trains, it is safe to assume that the “Relay Kamome” will be waiting on the other side of the train when the “Relay Kamome” arrives. This transfer is the same method that was used at Shin-Yatsushiro Station when the Kyushu Shinkansen (Shin-Yatsushiro Station – Kagoshima Chuo Station) was opened. The connection time is the same, basically 3 minutes. Three minutes may seem like a very short time, but in reality there is more time than one might think. However, when the Takeo Onsen station approaches, you should pack up your luggage and be ready to move quickly. The train will not leave before you have finished boarding, but there is a risk of forgetting something in your haste. In the past, there were many people who left their belongings in the train when changing between the “Tsubame” and “Relay Tsubame” trains at Shin-Yatsushiro Station, and the forgotten items were delivered by courier service with cash-on-delivery every day. The author does this on a daily basis everywhere, but before leaving his seat and getting off the train, when he has all his luggage, he takes a glance around his seat and at the luggage rack to see if he has left anything behind. This few seconds of consideration may save you from having to pay for the courier’s shipping costs.
