Background and Objectives

On Thursday, September 22 and Sunday, September 25, JICA Chair Lectures by Professor Kazuo Kuroda, Dean of Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies, Waseda University, were held at Maldives National University. This lecture was positioned as a full-fledged holding of the JICA Chair at the National University of Maldives, and was held in the form of an open lecture open to both faculty and students to foster a broad interest in Japanese studies. The seminar was open to both faculty and students of the university and was attended by 112 participants, including both on-site and online participants.

Contents

On Thursday, September 22, a lecture entitled “History of Japan’s Educational Development-Implication for Maldives” was held. Using video clips, he explained the modernization of Japan’s educational system from the Meiji Restoration to the present, explaining the characteristics of each period. Participants engaged in a lively Q&A session on issues such as teacher salary levels, the appropriate size of the education budget, and the desirable structure of the school curriculum in order to ensure the quality of education.

On September 25 (Sunday), a lecture entitled “Japanese Education from the International Perspectives – Implication for the Maldives” was held. Focusing particularly on the field of higher education, he introduced the history of internationalization in Japanese universities and recent trends in international student mobility within Europe and Asia. In particular, she touched on the expansion of inter-university agreements and intra-regional exchange programs in East Asia and the ASEAN region, including Japan, and suggested the potential for the development of higher education in the Maldives in cooperation with such university networks. Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, H.E. Midori Takeuchi, also delivered an address, in which she spoke of the significance of holding the JICA Chair Lecture in the Maldives on the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Japan, and expressed hope that the Lecture would increase interest in Japanese universities and increase the number of students from the Maldives to Japan. The lecture also expressed the hope that the lecture would increase the number of foreign students from the Maldives to Japan.
