JR Group will revise seasonal reserved-seat express fares for limited express trains including Shinkansen trains operated by JR Tokai, JR West, JR Shikoku, and JR Kyushu. Four levels of fares will be set according to the season of use, effective from April 1, 2023.
Currently, the express fares for reserved-seat express trains of JR Tokai, JR West (except Hokuriku Shinkansen), JR Shikoku, and JR Kyushu are divided into three levels according to the season. In the future, a new “busiest season” will be added during the GW, Bon Festival, and year-end and New Year periods, which are particularly popular, with an increase of 400 yen over the regular season, resulting in a four-level fare structure.
On the other hand, by shifting the travel dates slightly from the busiest periods, limited express trains will be available at lower prices than before. In addition, a peak season will be set during periods of high usage, such as autumn weekends in November, while new off-peak periods will be set for some weekdays in April, July, late August, and early October, when usage is relatively low.
In April 2023, the express fares for green car and sleeping car, which currently do not have season-specific fares, will be applied on a season-specific basis. The applicable day calendar will be the same as that for using a reserved seat in a standard car, with a 200 yen discount in off-season, a 200 yen increase in peak season, and a 400 yen increase in peak season from the current fare for using a green car and sleeping car.
This does not apply to limited express trains on conventional lines within JR Hokkaido and some limited express trains on conventional lines of JR East, which currently offer the same fare throughout the year when using a reserved seat in a standard car. Also, the off-peak season does not apply to JR Kyushu’s West Kyushu Shinkansen and limited express trains on conventional lines.
