Emergency Relief Aid for Drought Damage in Tuvalu

In response to a request from the government of Tuvalu, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will provide emergency relief supplies as follows.

Tuvalu relies on stored rainwater for most of its domestic water supply, and the amount of water that can be secured is greatly affected by the amount of rainfall. In response to this situation, the Tuvalu government established the National Drought Committee on May 5, formulated a drought countermeasure plan on July 15, and requested assistance from the international community on July 28, but the serious shortage of water continues. The drought is expected to continue through the end of this year, and the disaster is expected to be prolonged. In view of this situation, the country has made a formal request to the Japanese government for assistance.

(2) Transportation schedule

Due to the spread of the new coronavirus, there are currently no means of transporting supplies to Tuvalu by commercial aircraft. Therefore, we are currently working out the details of the schedule for the transportation of supplies with the cooperation of the Australian government (Australian Armed Forces).
