JAL and GIFTY announced on November 2 that they will collaborate to promote “traveler’s tax payment.
The “e-tax” system allows users to make a donation to the local government of a travel destination via a dedicated website before or during their trip, and immediately receive an electronic gift certificate called “e-machi gift” as a return gift. The gift certificates can be used at accommodations, restaurants, tourist facilities, transportation, etc. at the travel destination and can be deducted from the hometown tax payment.
The travel tax payment system uses Gifty’s e-machi platform. The service itself was launched in November 2019, and although the introduction of the service has been delayed by the Corona disaster, 15 municipalities have adopted the service as of today, with an expected expansion to 25 municipalities by the end of the year.
