Emergency Relief for Tropical Storm Damage in the Republic of Guatemala -Delivery of Donated Goods
Emergency relief supplies provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for tropical storm damage in the Republic of Guatemala have been delivered to the country.
Emergency relief supplies for the Republic of Guatemala arrived at La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City, the capital of Guatemala, by November 2. On November 4, at 11:30 a.m. (local time) in the press conference room of the National Disaster Response Coordinating Committee (CONRED), Oscar Estuardo Cossio Camara, Chairman of CONRED, from the Republic of Guatemala, Takeshi Yamamoto, Ambassador of Japan to Guatemala, and Naotaka Yamaguchi, JICA The ceremony was attended by Ambassador Takeshi Yamamoto of Guatemala and JICA Guatemala Office Director Naotaka Yamaguchi of Japan.
At the handover ceremony, Mr. Cossio expressed his deep appreciation for Japan’s prompt support and stated that the goods would be put to good use in the severely damaged areas of Guatemala. In response, Ambassador Yamamoto expressed his strong sympathy and solidarity with the people of Guatemala, as Japan has experienced many disasters, and expressed his hope that the lives of the victims will be restored as soon as possible. Director Yamaguchi conveyed his message that Japan will continue to provide assistance to the Republic of Guatemala in the field of disaster prevention.
The blankets and sleeping pads provided this time will be delivered to the victims by the government of the country as soon as possible.
This tropical storm caused widespread damage not only to homes, but also to social infrastructure and crops, as rivers overflowed their banks, flooding urban areas and causing landslides. According to the government of Guatemala, as of October 18, 65 people were killed, 9 people are missing, 29,573 people were affected, and 13,611 people were evacuated to evacuation centers. The JICA Guatemala office will continue to work with the National Disaster Response Coordinating Committee (CONRED) on disaster response efforts.
