Seikan Ferry named its new 3,000-ton vessel Hayabusa 2, which is scheduled to enter service in March 2023, and held a naming and launching ceremony on November 7 at the Hakodate Shipyard & Machinery Works’ No. 1 berth.
Hayabusa2 is the 913th vessel ordered by Hakodate Dotsukuri as a replacement for Asakaze5. The bow of the conventional vessel has been reshaped to reduce wave resistance, and the structure of the stern hull bottom has been substantially revised to suppress the rocking caused by the waves of the Tsugaru Straits, which tend to be rough.
The screw and engine of the propulsion section will improve fuel efficiency by about 5% at maximum output compared to the ferry in operation. Engine noise transmitted to passenger cabins will also be reduced.
The ship’s interior design is a graphic depiction of the Goryokaku fort and onko trees associated with Hakodate City.
