Chancellor Tanaka Visits Mongolia

JICA President Akihiko Tanaka visited Mongolia from October 31 to November 2, 2022, the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Mongolia. He also met with President Hrelsuf and other government officials, visited the site of the JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers program, and delivered a special lecture by the JICA Chair at the National University of Mongolia.

The 25th Anniversary of JICA Mongolia Office and the 30th Anniversary of JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers Program were celebrated on November 1 in Ulaanbaatar with the participation of the Minister of Finance, H.E. Jabhuran Jabhuran, the Minister of Education and Science, H.E. Enkhuamgaran, the Minister of Nature, Environment and Tourism, H.E. Mr. Bat-eldene, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Mongolia, H.E. Hiroyuki Kobayashi, and about 200 Mongolian and The event was held in Ulaanbaatar with the participation of approximately 200 people from Mongolia and Japan. In his speech, President Tanaka reiterated that JICA will continue to focus on the relationship based on trust with the Mongolian people and work together for the development of Mongolia in the post-corona era.

During the meeting with President Hrelsuf, the President expressed his gratitude for JICA’s cooperation over the years. President Tanaka introduced JICA’s active cooperation in promoting the three presidential initiatives of food security, healthy Mongolian people, and planting one billion trees, and also exchanged views on future cooperation in new areas such as digital industry and tourism development in light of the new revitalization policy announced by the Mongolian government last December. They also met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Bat Tsetseg, Minister of Finance Jabufran, and Minister of Education and Science Enghuamgaran, and exchanged views on JICA’s future cooperation.

In Ulaanbaatar, the group visited School No. 48, which was once built with Japanese grant aid and is now being operated by JICA volunteers. The deployment of JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers in Mongolia resumed in June of this year, and we confirmed once again that JICA volunteer projects are contributing to improving the lives of Mongolian people and solving social issues in With Post Corona.

At the JICA Chair’s Special Lecture at the National University of Mongolia, Chancellor Tanaka gave a lecture titled “Japan after the Cold War” to approximately 130 students studying Japanese and former international students. During the Q&A session following the lecture, participants asked many questions.

JICA will continue to work toward resolving issues in Mongolia.
