Special nighttime opening of Nagoya Castle and first lighting up of Ninomaru Garden. Live music, talk shows, and recitations.

Posted on 2022-11-10 by Editor in Chief

Nagoya City will hold “Nagoya Castle Autumn Night Special Viewing: Kei – KEI” for 14 days from November 25 to December 8. Admission is 500 yen for adults and free for junior high school students and younger.

During the period, the Honmaru Goten will be open to the public at night, and the Kikunorogi corridor in the palace will be open to the public for the first time. In addition, the Ninomaru Garden will be illuminated for the first time.

Nagoya Castle Honmaru Goten was completed in 1615 as the residence of the lord of the Owari domain and the domain’s government office. The interior of the palace was lavishly decorated with paintings and ornamental metal fittings, but was destroyed by fire in an air raid in 1945.

The Kikunororo-ya is located on the north side of Jorakuden “Jodan-no-Ma,” which was extended for the third shogun, Iemitsu, to stay at Nagoya Castle on his way to Kyoto. This is the first time that the hall is open to the public, and visitors will be able to see the gold and azure colored barrier paintings depicting red and white chrysanthemums and running water. During the exhibition period, visitors can also enter the “Tsugi-no-Ma” room, where they can see the details of people’s gestures and clothing depicted in the “Fuzoku-zu” (genre paintings) up close.

This year, special viewing of the Ninomaru Garden will also be offered. The creative label “PERIMETRON” has created a space where “light” and “shade” intertwine, focusing on the characteristics of light: reflection, transmission, scattering, refraction, and absorption. Light-up begins at 4:00 p.m.

In addition, there will be live performances by artists, food space, talk shows, reading sessions, etc. On December 8, Kyoko Koizumi will give an evening reading “Full Moon Night Castle Reading Session”. The venue is a special stage in the Honmaruden courtyard (south side). Advance registration is required.
