Signed a grant agreement for Cambodia: Contributed to improving the country’s ability to supply safe water, promoting demining and unexploded ordnance removal, and improving medical waste management

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the Royal Government of Cambodia on November 12 in Phnom Penh for three projects totaling up to 6,248 million yen.

The following three grant aid projects have been awarded.

(1) Pumlek Waterworks Expansion Project (3,361 million yen)

(2) Cambodia Mine Action Center Training Complex and Public Information Facility Construction Project (2,451 million yen)

(3) Infectious waste management improvement plan (436 million yen)

Details of each project are as follows

(1) Pumphreck Waterworks Expansion Project

(The Project for the Expansion of Phum Prek Water Supply System)

Purpose and Outline of the Project

This project aims to improve the supply capacity of safe water in the capital city of Phnom Penh, where the supply and demand of water is tight, by constructing water intake facilities, expanding water treatment plants, and upgrading water intake pumps and distribution pumps. This project is expected to improve the living environment of Phnom Penh residents and contribute to SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goal 3 (health and welfare for all) and Goal 6 (safe water and toilets worldwide).

This project will be the second grant assistance (*) in Cambodia for project and operation rights, following the Takmau Waterworks Expansion Project (G/A in May 2020). By applying Japan’s efficient operation and maintenance know-how to the operation and maintenance of the waterworks facilities, the project is expected to provide high quality water supply services while controlling the increase in water rates.

(*)Grant aid for project/operating rights: Grant aid for public-private partnership (PPP) projects with high economic benefits but low profitability, where the government of the developing country bears part of the project cost and profitability is expected to be secured.
