In the Cuban fisheries industry, aquaculture accounted for about half of the total production of marine products, with about 30,000 tons produced annually through aquaculture. The Ministry of Fisheries (MIP) has been able to independently conduct parentage rearing of native saltwater fish through the Japan-Chile joint “saltwater fish aquaculture” cooperative project at the Fisheries Research Center (CIP). However, the technology had not yet reached the stage where egg collection and hatching were feasible.
The cooperation aimed to strengthen the technical capacity of lobaro and pargo aquaculture in CIP through renovation of CIP facilities, production of lobaro and pargo seedlings, development of manuals, and training of staff, and to implement the Cuban government’s aquaculture of pargo.
