Traditional agriculture in the arid or semi-arid lands of Morocco depends on weather conditions with erratic rainfall patterns, and farmers suffer from frequent droughts. In addition, the projected increase in water demand for drinking and industrial uses made it important to invest in irrigation systems to promote efficient water-saving technologies in the agricultural sector. The Japanese government, therefore, established irrigation facilities in the Abuda Dukala irrigation area through a grant aid project. However, it was difficult to secure sufficient amounts of necessary water in the area, especially during the dry season, making it difficult to achieve profitable agricultural production. This cooperation supported the establishment of an efficient irrigation model and improved irrigation management system through water-saving irrigation, introduction of highly profitable agriculture, and improvement and dissemination of water management system in the targeted irrigation areas in Abuda Dukkala, aiming to improve irrigation efficiency and profitability in agricultural production in the Abuda Dukkala irrigation area.
