This winter, 18% will travel abroad and 66% will travel domestically. Expedia and Hotels.com Release Results of Year-End and Winter Travel Attitude Survey

Posted on 2022-12-23 by Editor in Chief

Expedia and Hotels.com jointly conducted a survey of men and women aged 25-55 who take a vacation trip at least once every two to three years on their attitudes toward travel this year-end and winter season (December to February 2023).

According to the survey, 36% of respondents said they would like to reward themselves with a trip this holiday and winter season. As for gifts for family and friends, 51% also said that they would prefer travel to gifts and other things. The survey states that more and more people believe that experiences and experiences such as travel are more important than things, gaining a period of time when travel was restricted.

In addition, 59% said they “have or will have a wish list” of the next trip they want to take, with an average of six destinations on that list. In addition, 69% said that having a wish list would make them look forward to their next trip more.

During the year-end and winter season of 2022-2023, 18% plan to travel abroad and 66% plan to travel domestically. Of those who plan to travel abroad at this time, 76% will be traveling abroad for the first time since March 2020.

As for who they will be traveling with, more than 60% of respondents said they plan to travel with family members. In addition, according to search data from Expedia and Hotels.com, the average length of trips being searched for was approximately two days.

As for travel expenses for this year-end and winter season, 19% of all respondents plan to spend “200,000 yen or more”. This indicates that there are a certain number of people who are willing to spend money on vacation, even under the circumstances of global inflation.

According to Expedia data, Bangkok, Oahu (Hawaii), and Seoul were the most searched international travel destinations for the holiday season and winter season. Other than Hawaii, which is the most popular destination, Asian countries that are close to Japan are ranked among the top destinations, indicating that short, inexpensive and close trips are the trend.

In addition, 67% of the survey respondents said they plan to travel to colder regions where they can enjoy snow and winter scenery. The most common response as to why they were traveling was “to relax and relieve myself from exhaustion (e.g., wellness experience).

Expedia and Hotels.com are offering special deals and offers for the holiday season and winter season. Expedia is offering a coupon for a 7% discount on eligible international hotels exclusively for reservations made through the Expedia app. Please check the campaign website for details.
