Booking.com has released a ranking of the destinations that people in Japan most want to visit and those most sought after by people around the world, based on a survey of travel destinations searched on its site by people from around the world for the search period of December 23, 2011 to January 1, 2023.
The ranking of travel destinations searched for by people in Japan shows that the top 10 destinations are all domestic cities, similar to the same survey conducted at the same time last year. This indicates that Japanese travelers are still cautious about international travel.
On the other hand, when the range is expanded to the top 100 cities and compared to last year, 12 foreign countries are ranked this year, whereas last year only one foreign city was ranked, indicating the growing interest in overseas travel in the future.
A comparison of the top 10 overseas travel destinations searched for by people in Japan with the same period last year shows that all Asian countries either moved up or tied in the rankings. The cities that rose the most in the rankings were Hanoi, Busan, and Kuala Lumpur, indicating a growing interest in new Asian countries that did not make the rankings last year.
On the other hand, American cities such as Honolulu, New York, and Los Angeles all saw their rankings drop. Compared to the Asian countries that ranked Paris, Honolulu, and New York, the Western cities ranked this year, the Asian countries had a higher rate of increase in ranking, with each of the top 10 Asian countries, with the exception of Bangkok, which was tied, rising more than 160 places in the rankings. In addition, seven of the 10 cities in this year’s ranking were in Asian countries, indicating the growing popularity of countries with relaxed travel restrictions that are close to Japan.
Comparing the ranking of global cities searched by people from all over the world to last year, and summarizing the countries with the highest increase in searches, Japan was ranked 9th in the world. 7 Asian countries were ranked among the 10 cities, indicating the growing interest in the Asian region. The report suggests that Asian countries, including Japan, have been slower than other regions in easing entry restrictions for foreigners, and that this may be the reason for the growing interest of travelers from around the world in the region.
