The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has issued an emergency announcement regarding heavy snowfall.
According to the announcement, heavy snow is expected to fall mainly on the Sea of Japan side of northern to western Japan from December 22 to 26. Due to the inflow of strong cold air into western Japan and the slow movement of cold air, heavy snow is expected to persist mainly on the Sea of Japan side from northern to western Japan for a long period of time.
In the event of heavy snowfall, drivers are urged to refrain from going outside unnecessarily, and if they have no choice but to drive, they are required to install winter tires, carry chains and install them as soon as possible, and tend to use winter equipment such as shovels and sand. In addition, since there is a possibility of road closures over a wide area depending on snowfall conditions and other factors, cooperation is requested in the implementation of wide-area detours and review of traffic routes.
In the event of heavy snowfall or other circumstances that may hinder the safety of transportation, carriers are required to take necessary measures to ensure safety, such as confirming that winter tires are installed on commercial vehicles. In the event of a malicious standstill on a snow-covered road, if the measures taken are deemed inadequate after confirming the facts in an audit, the operator will be subject to administrative sanctions.
