In India, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MRAHT) initiated the National Highway Development Program in 2001, and has been constructing major trunk roads between major cities, including the “Golden Quadrilateral” connecting the capital Delhi, Mumbai in the west, Kolkata in the east, and Chennai in the southeast. In the northeastern region, however, road construction has lagged behind, hindering the stable flow of people and logistics within the region and to other regions within and outside the country, and contributing to the slow pace of economic development. In particular, National Highway 208 is poorly paved, with only 1 to 1.5 lanes round-trip, impeding human transportation and logistics.
This cooperation will improve the existing National Highway 208 connecting Khowai to Subrohm in the state of Tripura in the northeastern region of India (including the construction of a new bypass), thereby improving connectivity within the region and with other regions in and outside of India, and contributing to the promotion of economic development in the region.
