Cairns Tourism is urging people to obtain an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) before entering Australia.
There have been an increasing number of cases where people arrive at the airport without an ETA and are pointed out at check-in. Japanese nationals are allowed to apply for an ETA when entering Australia, which can be obtained online. The ETA is valid for one year, and allows for any number of stays of up to three months per trip within the validity period.
All that is required for the application is a passport, credit card, and e-mail address. The application fee is A$20 (approximately 1,790 yen, converted to A$1 = approximately 89.5 yen) as of December 2022. Applications can be made through the “AustralianETA” smartphone app (Android/iOS), but the company recommends obtaining the application at least three days prior to travel, as it may take some time from application to approval (agency services are not available).
