On January 18, JNTO (Japan National Tourism Organization) announced the number of foreign visitors to Japan for December 2022 and for the year.
Following the government’s significant relaxation of waterfront measures in October, the December single month figure increased 1.5-fold from the previous month to 1.37 million, bringing the 2022 year-to-date total to 3.8319 million.
According to JNTO, the significant increase in arrivals from South Korea, as well as the recovery trend in visits to Japan from Thailand and the U.S., are believed to have been the boosting factors.
However, compared to the pre-Corona total of 2019, the number of visitors remains at about 12% (2019 actual: 3,188,049), and further recovery will require efforts such as restoring air service, attracting regional visitors, expanding consumption, and disseminating accurate information.
