Their Imperial Highnesses Prince and Princess Akishino and Prince Hisahito of Japan visit JICA Yokohama Overseas Migration Museum and meet with four Japanese Americans

On January 10, Their Imperial Highnesses Prince and Princess Akishino and Prince Hisahito visited the JICA Yokohama Museum of Overseas Migration’s 20th anniversary “Permanent Exhibition” and “Special Exhibition (Yuuhi Futatabi: History of Okinawan Migration and Uchinanchu Bonds)” and met with four Japanese Americans.

At the Overseas Migration Museum, which was reopened last year, visitors were guided by Professor Emeritus Hiromasa Nakamaki of the National Museum of Ethnology as they viewed the permanent exhibition introducing the history of emigration and life in the region. They especially listened attentively to the explanations of the Settlement Theater and the Nikkei in the World Corner. They also viewed the special exhibition, “The History of Okinawan Immigration and Uchinanchu Ties,” which was held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the reversion of Okinawa to Japan. Afterwards, Their Imperial Highnesses and His Imperial Highness Prince Hisahito met with Mr. Takahashi Slimala, Mr. Rafael Fuchigami, Ms. Oui, Ide, and Ms. Caldeira Rie, all Brazilians of Japanese descent living in Japan, and Mr. Alberto Matsumoto, an Argentinean of Japanese descent. The guests, though nervous, explained their backgrounds and activities, and received words of encouragement from Their Imperial Highnesses Prince and Princess Akishino and His Imperial Highness Prince Yuhito.

JICA will continue to promote collaborative projects with the Nikkei community in the Latin American region.
