On February 10, President Akihiko Tanaka met with President Ferdinand Marcos of the Republic of the Philippines in Tokyo.
At the beginning of the meeting, President Tanaka noted that trust between Japan and the Philippines has been deepened through longstanding cooperation in the field of disaster management and the Mindanao peace process, and expressed his hope that the current administration will continue to strengthen cooperation between the two countries. He also reviewed his impressions from his visit to the Bangsamoro Muslim Mindanao Autonomous Region in January, and emphasized that the Mindanao peace process will lead to the stability and development of the Philippines as a whole, and that he will continue to support the Bangsamoro Provisional Authority, which aims to establish an autonomous government in the region under an agreement with the Philippine government, including strengthening its administrative capacity. The government of the Philippines will continue to support the Bangsamoro Provisional Authority in its efforts to establish an autonomous government in the region.
In response, President Marcos thanked JICA for its comprehensive cooperation, including infrastructure development, disaster management, and Mindanao peace assistance, and expressed his hope for continued cooperation as an important partner of the Philippines.
