Shibuya is currently undergoing a redevelopment project around Shibuya Station that is said to be a once-in-a-century project.
The Shibuya Station Sakuragaoka-guchi Area Type 1 Urban Redevelopment Project is being promoted by the Shibuya Station Sakuragaoka-guchi Area Urban Redevelopment Association. The demolition work started in January 2019.
The buildings are located on the A block (SHIBUYA side, 39 floors above ground, 4 floors below ground) and the B block (SAKURA side, 39 floors above ground, 4 floors below ground). (39 floors above ground, 4 floors below ground), B (SAKURA side. 29 floors above ground, 2 floors below ground), and C (Naka-Shibuya Church of the Christian Church of Japan. (29 floors above ground, 2 floors below ground), and the C section (Naka-Shibuya Church of Christ in Japan, 4 floors above ground). (4 floors above ground)). The basic structure has already been completed, and the building was topped out on September 23, 2022. Tokyu Land Corporation is participating in this project as a participating partner.
Tokyu Land Corporation has announced that the name of the complex, which will become a new landmark in Shibuya, has been decided as “Shibuya Sakura Stage” and is scheduled for completion in November 2023. The following is a report on the facility briefing.
The development area is adjacent to the railroad, National Route 246, and urban planning roads, but plans call for the construction of an “urban core,” a pedestrian walkway that connects the area to the surrounding area in a three-dimensional fashion. It is planned to provide barrier-free access to Shibuya Station, the surrounding buildings, and the hills in the Sakuragaoka area. As you can see when you actually walk around the area, from Shibuya Station to Daikanyama or Ebisu, you will be climbing a very steep hill. It is expected to enhance the circulation without being divided by the difference in elevation of Shibuya’s unique topography, railroads, and arterial roads.
At the briefing, we were also able to see the view from the 37th floor of “SHIBUYA Tower,” the tallest building on the Shibuya Station side. Let me first show you what “Shibuya Sakura Stage” looks like under construction, including these views.
The “Shibuya Sakura Stage,” a large-scale redevelopment complex, will consist of offices, stores, residences, serviced apartments, a church, and a parking lot, and will also include corporate support facilities, international medical facilities, and childcare support facilities. The SAKURA Tower will house 126 serviced apartments for mid- to long-term residents called “Hyatt House Tokyo Shibuya,” and the lobby area will include a lounge and bar. On the upper level, 155 residences will be built as “Brands Shibuya Sakuragaoka.
The commercial facility, which will cover an area of approximately 15,200 m2, will be located on the lower floors of the entire area. President Okada said, “We want to create an atmosphere different from that of a typical shopping mall, with many distinctive stores that make use of the original stores.
This neighborhood was also a corner lined with music stores and music studios, where many young band members gathered. The “Nigiwai STAGE” is an event space that will create a gathering place for people who enjoy a variety of hobbies and creators, as well as an exchange space with digital signage. We hope that this will be a unique and enjoyable facility.
At the briefing, Mr. Masashi Okada, President and Representative Director of Tokyu Land Corporation, announced that the name of the project would be “Shibuya Sakura Stage.” He also explained the history of the redevelopment project, noting that the former preparatory association was established in October 1998, the preparatory association was established in 2008, and meetings with 120 landowners were held almost every week. Referring to the 640 meetings that took place, he said, “We have continued discussions on how to create a town that will continue to bustle with activity for the next generation. We have devoted an unparalleled amount of time and resources to this project, including cooperation in the construction of a new ticket gate to eliminate the division of the city, which is a long-cherished wish of the local residents, and large-scale infrastructure development to overcome the valley shape,” he explained.
The project site before development had many small lots, and effective use of land was an issue. The area was densely populated with non-fireproof buildings that had deteriorated, so it was necessary to improve the city’s disaster resistance and create a safe and secure town. We will improve the attractiveness of the entire Shibuya district by integrating the vast site southwest of Shibuya Station and developing the Sakuragaoka-guchi district as a new gateway to the city.
Shibuya is seamlessly connected to all aspects of the lifestyles of people who work, play, live, and relax. This facility is equipped with a bustling green relaxation plaza, something that has never existed in the Shibuya Station area before. The Tokyu Group aims to carry on and develop the diverse culture that has been nurtured in Shibuya, attracting a more diverse range of people and creating a more diverse culture. The Tokyu Group aims to develop the area and create a lively atmosphere, and to make Shibuya an attractive town and entertainment city that constantly attracts people from all over the world.
Akiko Enokido, Director, Managing Executive Officer and General Manager of the Urban Business Unit of Tokyu Land Corporation, and Yasuhiro Kurokawa, Executive Officer and General Manager of the Shibuya Development Division of the Urban Business Unit of Tokyu Land Corporation, took the stage to introduce the facility and gave a presentation.
Finally, here are some excerpts from the CG movie of the “Shibuya Sakura Stage” that was shown during the presentation. Let us look forward to the opening of this new landmark of Shibuya.
