New Zealand’s Fifth “Starry Sky Reserve” Created. Light Pollution Free Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve

Posted on 2023-02-222023-02-22 by Editor in Chief

New Zealand has announced that the South Wairarapa and Carterton districts, located northeast of Wellington, have been recognized by the International Dark Sky Association as a “Starry Sky Reserve.

This has also given the area the name “Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve”. This will be the fifth reserve in New Zealand, and will allow visitors to look up at constellations and shooting stars in the jet-black night sky of over 3,600 km2 in a vast, unspoiled wilderness. It is protected from light intrusion by the location of the Pacific Ocean to the east and south, and the forested areas of Lemtaka and Talalua to the west. There are plans to expand the protected area to the Masterton district in the north, which would bring the total area to 5895 km2 if realized.

Furthermore, in order to continue to protect the dark and beautiful starry skies, New Zealand is also aiming to be recognized as a “Starry Sky Protected Country”.
