Viti Levu, the largest island in the Fiji Islands, has the Queen’s Road, which connects the east and west sides of the island and is the only road that is accessible to large vehicles and is an important highway for the transportation of daily commodities. The Tama Bua I Wai Bridge (90 meters long) on this road has sustained serious damage to its piers due to salt damage and driftwood during the cyclone, in addition to damage to the road surface and structure caused by overloaded vehicles. Although emergency repairs are being carried out as needed, the bridge has yet to be fundamentally repaired, and there is a risk that it may collapse during a strong cyclone.
This cooperation will replace the Tama Bua i Wai bridge over Queen’s Road, the most important arterial road in the suburbs of Suva, the capital of Viti Levu, to ensure safe and stable traffic, enhance transportation capacity and traffic safety, and contribute to strengthening the resilience of the backbone road against natural disasters caused by climate change and other factors in the country.
