Hawaii is in full power, and new and relocated restaurants and stores are opening all over the state. Many hotels have taken advantage of the pandemic to undergo major renovations, while others are in the midst of construction for reopening.
The so-called “grand openings” are often held to introduce the event and we, the media, are often invited to attend. Recently, influencers such as Instagrammers and YouTubers have also been invited, making the scene more colorful.
The “Hawaiian Blessing” is a traditional Hawaiian ceremony that is always held during the opening ceremonies in Hawaii. It is a traditional Hawaiian ceremony, and people who see it for the first time are often surprised or moved, and some even stop to watch.
For example, Gelatissimo (2201 Kalakaua Ave, Honolulu), a favorite gelato store I have been going to since it opened, had its grand opening in December 2022.
The opening ceremony for the first store in Hawaii was held in a Hawaiian ceremony, as the company wanted the store to be “rooted in the local community.
As shown in the video above, the ceremony begins with a Hawaiian chant (prayer in Hawaiian) by the kahu, the inheritor of the Hawaiian tradition, followed by the traditional Hawaiian blessing. The sacred leaves, ti-leaf, and water with Hawaiian salt poured into a wooden bowl are used to purify the body. The ceremony is then officially opened by untying the knot of the maile (leaf) lei hanging at the entrance.
The Japanese ribbon-cutting ceremony also has the meaning of “opening” or “cutting off calamities,” but the use of leis instead of tapes is also typical of Hawaii.
Another Los Angeles-based store, Junbi (2301 Kalakaua Ave, Honolulu), which opened on the first floor of the Royal Hawaiian Center, specializing in matcha green tea drinks, held its first Hawaii store opening at Hawaiian Blessing.
There is laughter in the video, and although it is a sacred ceremony, I think the smiles and laughter are also a part of Hawaii’s unique peacefulness.
Hawaiian blessings have many meanings. It is a prayer in honor of the land, its history, ancestors, and the aqua (Hawaiian God), connecting the energy (mana) there to what is to come.
Lastly, Kate Spade New York relocated and opened in the Royal Hawaiian Center.
The ceremony begins with the maile lei being hung in front of the new store entrance.
Continue to Cuffe’s blessing.
When the maile lei is released, the door is opened amidst cheers from all around.
This time, we introduced the Hawaiian Blessing Ceremony at each store in the Royal Hawaiian Center, which continued to open. To begin with, this area is a historic place called “Helumoa,” an area where Hawaiian royalty once had residences and villas.
Coming here, you will feel that the people who visit this place and the stores are part of the flow of Hawaii’s history that has been spun out to the present day and will continue to be spun out to the future.
Hawaii has a legal requirement to have the “Aloha Spirit”. The people who live here and the companies that do business here must be based on the “Aloha Spirit” of kindness, harmony, bonding, and humility.
The Hawaiian Blessing is one way to learn about Hawaii’s unique values and culture.
