Tottori Prefecture and Pokémon Inc. announced that Sand Park, featuring Sand and Alola Sand, is scheduled to open on May 5 at Chubu Tottori Sand Dunes Kodomo no Kuni (1157-1 Hamasaka, Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture) in Tottori City.

As part of a cooperative agreement between the prefecture and the company to revitalize the local community, playground equipment featuring Sand and Alola Sand, the Pokémon that serve as Tottori Hometown Ambassadors, will be installed in Chubu Tottori Sand Dunes Kodomo no Kuni, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. The park will open as “Sand Park.

Sand and Alola Sand are Pokémon that appear in the “Pokémon” video game series. Sand was appointed as the Tottori Hometown Ambassador in December 2018 because Sand is a Pokémon that prefers sandy terrain and is a perfect fit for Tottori Prefecture, which has Tottori Sand Dunes, one of the three largest sand dunes in Japan. Alola Sand is Sand adapted to its natural environment of snowy mountains.

The company donated 11 pieces of playground equipment and peripheral facilities featuring Sand and Alola Sand, and Tottori Prefecture will install the equipment. The illustrations depict a sandbox with Sand and a slide in the shape of Alola Sand.

On March 10, prior to the opening of the park, a Sand Park donation ceremony was held at the Tottori Prefectural Government Office, where Sand and Allora Sand also made an appearance.

Since 2018, the company has been selecting “Recommended Pokémon” for each region as “Pokémon Local Acts,” with the aim of simultaneously communicating the appeal of each region and Pokémon to people in Japan and abroad, and increasing the number of fans of both. Currently, the company is working with Hokkaido, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Mie, Kagawa, Tottori, and Miyazaki prefectures on a variety of initiatives.
