On March 17, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government will designate a convenience zone between Shimbashi and Toranomon on Loop Route 2 as part of its efforts to utilize the pedestrian convenience road (hokomichi) system. Local organizations will hold events in the area.
The Hokomichi System is a system that flexibly grants permission for road occupancy by defining spaces within sidewalks and other areas where pedestrian space is secured and convenience is promoted. The system is intended to promote the use of road space for eating, drinking, and other activities, and to create a lively street space.
Until now, local groups have been using the Urban Revitalization Special Measures Law to set up open cafes along Loop Route 2 (between Shimbashi and Toranomon). This is the first time that the area has been designated as a convenience promotion zone in Tokyo, and a marché will be held there. The period is April 27-29.
