The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Loan Agreement (L/A) with the Government of the Republic of Panama for the “Panama Metropolitan Area Urban Transit Line 3 Project (Phase II)” in Panama City on March 16, 2012, for a loan amount of up to 92 billion yen.
This project is a continuation of the Urban Transit Line 3 Project (Phase I), which began in 2016, to develop Urban Transit Line 3 connecting the central and western regions of Metropolitan Panama using a monorail system.
This is the first monorail project in the Latin American region that utilizes Japanese quality technology and has a proven track record of operating as a safe and reliable urban transit system. The purpose of the project is to contribute to sustainable economic growth in the country by improving urban transportation functions and reducing carbon dioxide emissions through the construction of Urban Transit Line 3. This will contribute to SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goals 9 (Create a foundation for industrial and technological innovation), 11 (Create cities that are livable), and 13 (Take concrete measures to combat climate change).
