Signing of Yen Loan Agreement for Bangladesh: Contributing to economic growth based on the Bay of Bengal Industrial Growth Zone Initiative and improving regional connectivity with neighboring countries

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Loan Agreement (L/A) with the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh on March 29 in Dhaka for three projects totaling up to 165,319 million yen.

The following three projects are covered by the yen loan agreements signed this time.

(1) Matavali Port Development Project (Phase II) (Loan amount: 105,362 million yen)

(2) Chotgram-Cox’s Bazar Trunk Highway Improvement Project (Phase I) (Loan amount: 55,729 million yen)

(3) Joidepur-Ishroudi Railways Double Track Project (E/S) (Loan amount: 4,228 million yen)

Details of each business are as follows

(1)Matavari Port Development Project (Phase II)

Matarbari Port Development Project (II)

(a) Purpose and outline of business

This project will contribute to the economic development of the country by constructing a multi-purpose deep-sea port for containers and general cargo in Matabari, Cox’s Bazar District, Chotgram District, thereby improving the country’s cargo handling capacity and promoting logistics with neighboring countries. and 9 of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).

(c) Schedule for future project implementation (tentative)

  1. Scheduled completion of the project: January 2027 (the project will be completed when the facilities are put into service)
  2. Expected date of sending invitation for consulting services (detailed design, etc.): Hired

  3. Publication of bids for the first procurement package under international competitive bidding for the main body of work

Package name: Development of multipurpose and dedicated container terminal

Scheduled date: June 2022 (publicly announced)

(2) Chotgram-Cox’s Bazar Trunk Road Improvement Project (Phase I)

Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar Highway Improvement Project (I)

(a) Purpose and outline of business

This project aims to facilitate traffic flow and improve access to Matabali Port by constructing a flyover and bypass road on a major congested section of National Highway 1 between Chotgram and Cox’s Bazar, thereby contributing to the economic development of the areas along the route and to the promotion of logistics in the country. The project will contribute to Goals 3, 8 and 9 of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).

Roads and Highways Department, Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges

Package Name: Flyover and Road Construction Package

Scheduled date: July 2024

(3)Joidepur-Ishroudi Railway Double Track Project (E/S)

Project for the Construction of Dual Gauge Double Line Between Joydebpur-Ishurdi Section (E/S)

(a) Purpose and outline of business

This project will contribute to Goals 9 and 13 of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). This loan covers engineering services related to the detailed design and bidding assistance for the above project, and will facilitate smooth implementation of the project.

(b) Project implementing agency
