International Emergency Relief for Cyclone Damage in Malawi -Delivery of Donated Goods

Emergency relief supplies provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have been delivered to the Republic of Malawi (hereinafter referred to as “Malawi”) in response to the damage caused by the cyclone that hit the country.

Emergency relief supplies for Malawi arrived in Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, on March 24. A handover ceremony was held at Kamuzu International Airport at 9:00 a.m. (local time) on March 25, attended by Mr. Sosten Alfred Gwengwe, Minister of Finance and Economy from the Malawian side, and Ambassador Yoichi Oya, Ambassador of Japan to Malawi, Mr. Kazuhiro Tanbara, Director of Malawi Office, and others from the Japanese side.

At the handover ceremony, Minister Gwengwe expressed his deep appreciation for Japan’s prompt assistance, and stated that among the goods that had arrived, tents in particular would be distributed to those who had taken shelter in schools in order to reopen schools that had been closed to receive disaster victims. In response, Ambassador Oya expressed his hope that Japan would continue to stand by Malawi and that the country would recover from the cyclone damage as soon as possible.

The relief supplies provided this time will be delivered to the victims by the government of the country.
