JAL President Yuji Akasaka held a press conference at the company’s headquarters on March 23.

Among them, he explained the new aircraft to be introduced and explained the contract announced the same day for the purchase of 21 Boeing 737-8 aircraft (737 MAX series). This is the first time in 18 years that the company has ordered a new Boeing aircraft.

As the airline industry as a whole is moving toward virtually zero CO2 emissions by 2050, and JAL is moving forward with SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) procurement and fleet upgrades, fuel-efficient, low-noise, and low CO2 emissions were the criteria for selection for this fleet upgrade.

The JAL Group has about 90 medium-sized Boeing 767s and 90 small Boeing 737s in its fleet, and this time it will replace 21 of the 737s that were introduced around 2000. The JAL Group has a fleet of 90 medium-sized Boeing 767s and 90 small Boeing 737s, and will be renewing 21 of the 737s that were introduced around 2000.

Compared to the 737-800 currently in operation, the 737-8 is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 15% through the installation of new engines and the shape of the wingtips, etc. In addition, the 737-8 features an open cabin interior and a high level of quietness, and its cruising range has increased significantly from 5665 km (787-800) to 6570 The range has been significantly increased from 5665 km (787-800) to 6570 km, according to the manufacturer’s catalog values. Also, although this is also a catalog value, the number of seats ranges from 162 to 178 in a two-class configuration.

JAL’s 737-8 aircraft is scheduled to begin introduction in 2026.

Meanwhile, while the replacement of the Airbus A350-900 aircraft in service on domestic routes from the Boeing 777 is almost complete, preparations for the replacement of the 777 with the A350 on international routes are also in progress, with the 777-300ER aircraft to be replaced by the A350-1000. The first aircraft is scheduled to be introduced in the winter timetable of 2023 (October 2023 to March 2024). The first A350-1000 will be used on the Haneda-New York route. Incidentally, a glimpse of the first plane with the Tsurumaru logo painted on its tail was recently shown to the public.
