JICA President Akihiko Tanaka met with Dominican Republic Vice President Raquel Peña in Tokyo on April 4.

At the beginning of the meeting, Vice President Peña expressed his appreciation for JICA’s longstanding cooperation in the Dominican Republic and expressed his desire to continue to deepen cooperation between the two countries. Vice President Peña particularly appreciated JICA’s longstanding cooperation in the field of waste management, and expressed high expectations for JICA’s yen loans (Note 1) in the future. He also emphasized that the “Japan-Dominican Republic Friendship Medical Education Center” (Note 2) has been continuously providing medical services to the residents as a result of Japan’s cooperation, and further expressed his willingness for triangular cooperation with JICA for neighboring countries such as Haiti.

In response, President Tanaka referred to JICA’s past efforts in the Dominican Republic, its cooperation with the Nikkei, and its future cooperation plans, and stated that JICA would like to take prompt action toward the early signing of an L/A for a yen loan in the field of waste management. He also stated that JICA would like to consider multilateral cooperation and cooperation projects with the private sector in the future.

Vice President Peña also expressed his appreciation for JICA’s cooperation in translating the “Dominican Investment Guide” (Note 3) prepared by the Dominican government.
