On April 20, Weathernews released “Firefly Appearance Trends,” which forecasts the timing and peak of firefly appearances.
The appearance of fireflies in 2023 is expected to be on par with or earlier than usual, with western Japan expected to see fireflies from the end of this week. The peak of the season is expected to be mid to late May in western Japan, mid May to early June in eastern Japan, and mid June to early August in northern Japan.
The WeatherNews app and website also provide “firefly information” that allows users to search for viewing spots in approximately 100 locations throughout Japan.
Fireflies begin their activity around 7:30 p.m. after sunset, reaching their peak between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.. Fireflies can also be seen flying around 23:00 and 2:00 the following day, but the number of fireflies decreases after 21:00, so the company recommends 20:00-21:00 as the best time to visit.
