CYCLE MODE TOKYO 2023, one of Japan’s largest sports bicycle festivals, was held at Tokyo Big Sight from April 15 to 16. The festival features an area where visitors can feel the outdoors going with only minimal luggage on their bicycles, an “e-BIKE EXPO” zone focusing on sports-type electrically power assisted bicycles, and bicycles and peripheral equipment incorporating manufacturers’ original technologies.

Peripheral Equipment to Protect Yourself and Your Valuable Bicycle Helmets, which became mandatory on April 1, were also busy. OGK KABUTO, which offers helmets and peripheral parts, was also present, but due to the implementation of the revised Road Traffic Law, orders continue to exceed production, with some helmets taking several months to be delivered. The brand’s lineup of helmets ranges from sports-type helmets to hat-type helmets and those suitable for commuting to work or school. Even if we lump all hat types together, there are a wide variety of types and colors to choose from, such as outdoor-style hats and casual caps, to match the fashion of the day. The official website also includes a list of safety standard-certified bicycle helmets, which is recommended for those who want to combine design and safety. Speaking of sturdy bicycle equipment, the issue of locks is also important for cyclists. In particular, the German security brand ABUS is known for its pursuit of indestructible cycle locks. At the event, visitors were challenged to use wire cutters to cut a U-lock, which boasts the highest security level as an ABUS product. While regular cable locks are quickly cut, the ABUS U-lock was completely unfazed by the relatively easy to apply force. A male staff member demonstrated the U-lock, but it was impossible to get it to bite into the interior, only to create a cut-like streak on the surface. I have this U-lock mounted on my bicycle, and I can often leave it safely for a day or so in a back-alley bicycle parking lot in Tokyo. There are various types of bicycle locks, including U-locks, chain locks, and cable locks. ABUS also actively introduces the correct way to lock your bicycle and how to choose the best place to park it. The company also offers a “theft-indemnity program” for all locks, including folding folding locks and armored locks. Many users have placed their trust in ABUS’s determination and unyielding attitude against theft.
