KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is the flag carrier of the Netherlands, and in early February I flew with them for the first time in many years to see the Vermeer exhibition currently being held in Amsterdam. I will also introduce the Business Class Lounge at Schiphol Airport, which was renovated before Corona, and the Premium Comfort Class, which was introduced on Japan routes at the end of February.
First eastbound flight of my life from Anchorage to the Arctic Circle and over Greenland
The flight to Narita was KL864 departing from Narita at 11:30 a.m. The aircraft was a Boeing 777-300ER. This was my first eastbound flight in my long career as a journalist! The flight course was from Anchorage, through the Arctic Circle, and over Greenland. Watching it on the monitor, I felt like I was going around the globe. It takes 13 hours and 40 minutes. It seemed a little shorter than the westbound flight, which does not fly over Russia, but as an airline lover, it was not hard at all.
Incidentally, KLM business class passengers can use the NARITA PREMIER LOUNGE, a shared airline lounge in Terminal 1, Satellite 1, but since I had an Elite Plus frequent flyer card for SkyTeam, an alliance of which KLM is a member I was able to use the exclusive SkyTeam lounge at Terminal 2.
As in front of Corona, there is an extensive breakfast menu and a rosé spumante to get you going in the morning. I recommend it! Chicken curry was also added to the menu.
This time it was economy class, and for the first time in a long time I was reminded of KLM’s playful, slightly Dutch design. When boarding, emergency instructions are displayed on the monitor, but instead of a flight attendant making an appearance, a person on a Delftware tile (traditional Dutch pottery known for its blue and white color) appears. This is so typical of the Netherlands that I couldn’t resist taking a picture.
It was time for the in-flight meal. The first time I flew KLM, I took home a Delftware-style paper sheet under the tray because it was so cute, but this time, the top lid of the salad container was designed with a windmill, tulips, and the KLM logo, and I wanted to take this home, too.
Below are all of the in-flight meals I received on this outbound flight KL864 and return flight KL863. Start with a 250mL Heineken on the iron plate. The penne with tomato sauce for lunch on the return flight and the croissant cheese grilled sandwich for breakfast were excellent! The chocolate tart was also a perky treat. Oh yes, the South African white wine was also quite good!
There was a gallery in the rear of the cabin with a variety of snacks and as many beverages as you wanted. There are always several flight attendants on board and they are always friendly and helpful, and I have always found the staff on KLM to be very friendly compared to other Western airlines. The Netherlands, which has developed as a trading city since ancient times, has always welcomed people from all over the world with open arms, and diversity has long been a matter of course in this country. This is probably due in part to the character of the Dutch people.
This is Amsterdam Schiphol Airport after arrival. I was able to find a mobile SIM store for my phone easily and bought a 4GB 7-day package (20 euros). We took the train to our destination, Delft.
