I flew Jetstar Business Class to the northeast of Australia! Stayed at a hotel in Cairns with an ocean view all to myself!

Water border measures in Australia as well as Japan have been terminated! Finally, overseas travel has been fully restored. Australia has already removed entry restrictions related to the new coronavirus (in July 2022), and Japan’s current water border measures (entry restrictions) were also completed on May 8. Finally, overseas travel is fully restored. I’ve been waiting for this! I am sure that many of you are planning your travel plans as if to say, “I’ve been waiting for this! So, first, let’s look at the current travel information for Australia. An electronic visa called an “ETA” is required for travel for sightseeing and business trips. The application process is not particularly difficult. After downloading the “Australian ETA” application to your smartphone, follow the instructions (in English) to enter your name, date of birth, passport number, etc., and answer a few questions. All you need is your passport, email address, and credit card (application fee is 20 Australian dollars). For your contact information in Australia, enter the first hotel you will be staying at.

Jetstar connects Japan and Australia on three routes in two cities. Jetstar, which we used, is a low-cost carrier (LCC) based in Melbourne, Australia. It is the parent company of Jetstar Japan, which is well known in Japan. Jetstar currently operates three routes, Narita – Cairns, Narita – Gold Coast, and Kansai – Cairns, and this time I flew from Narita to Cairns and back from the Gold Coast to Narita. Of course, I used Jetstar’s domestic flights between Cairns and Gold Coast. Flight JQ26 departed from Narita Airport Terminal 3 at 20:05 and arrived at Cairns International Airport at 4:25 the next morning. The flight took about 7.5 hours and the time difference was +1 hour. Since it was a night flight, most of us put on eye masks and went to bed after finishing in-flight meals. I also fell asleep after watching a movie. In business class, all meals, snacks, and drinks are provided free of charge, and you can check in up to 14 kg of carry-on baggage and 30 kg of checked baggage free of charge. The aircraft is a Boeing 787 with a total of 335 seats, 21 in business class and 314 in economy class. The Jetstar Japan aircraft that flies within Japan is an Airbus A320 with a total of 180 seats, so the size of the aircraft is quite different. It was my first time to fly Jetstar Business Class, and it was very comfortable because there is a wide space between the seat in front of me and I could stretch my legs out thanks to the foldable footrests. For reference, the fares between Narita and Cairns are from 38,000 yen one way for economy class “Starter” and from 87,000 yen one way for business class (as of April 2023). If you have minimal baggage, don’t need meals, and want to keep costs as low as possible, choose economy class. On the other hand, if you are looking for a relaxing flight because it is your first overseas trip in a while, business class is recommended. Incidentally, both classes do not require fuel surcharges (*conditions apply).
