KDDI and Wi2 provide mountain lodge Wi-Fi in Hakuba Village in advance. with satellite communication service Starlink.

Posted on 2023-06-02 by Editor in Chief

KDDI and Wire and Wireless (Wi2), in cooperation with Yamap, will begin offering “mountain lodge Wi-Fi” using the “Starlink” satellite communication service to improve the communication environment in mountain lodges where signal reception is difficult. Prior to this, Happoike mountain lodge (1-4487 Kitashiro, Hakuba-mura, Kitaazumi-gun, Nagano Prefecture), operated by Hakuba Village Promotion Public Corporation, will start providing this service on May 29, and the number of available lodges will be gradually expanded in the future.

KDDI and Wi2 will jointly provide this Wi-Fi service using Starlink as a backhaul line. Since there is no need to install fiber-optic lines, stable communication is possible even in mountain lodges, where it has been difficult to establish a communication environment. This will enable users to communicate safety, check weather information, and post on SNS even in mountain lodges. In addition, lodge owners will be able to improve operational efficiency through the use of digital technology, including the introduction of cashless payment, lodging reservations, and the collection of disaster prevention and natural disaster information.

If you are an au user, you can use the service for free by connecting to SSID “Entry”, downloading and installing the configuration information (profile), and connecting to SSID “0001au”. Otherwise, a usage fee of 780 yen/24 hours will be charged. After connecting to SSID “Entry”, follow the instructions on the screen to pay with a credit card, download and install the configuration information, and connect to SSID “yamagoya_Wi2” to use the service.
