The best beaches in the U.S. for 2023 have been announced, and Waikiki’s beach was ranked No. 2.

Posted on 2023-06-02 by Editor in Chief

He created his own 50-point evaluation criteria and surveyed 650 major public beaches in the United States to select the best ones. The criteria included sand hardness, sand color, temperature, water temperature, number of sunny days, amount of rainfall, smell, litter, etc., and were rated on a 5-point scale. Initially, it took two years to finalize the criteria.

You often see in Hawaii guidebooks “the beach voted number one in the United States”. This charming phrase is based on “America’s Best Beaches,” which are announced at this time of year. The best beaches are chosen by Professor Stefan Leatherman, aka “Dr. Beach,” who studies coastal (environmental) sciences at Florida International University. He is a scientist who has loved “sand” since he was playing in a sandbox as a child. He has been announcing the “Top 10 Best Beaches in America” since 1991, before Memorial Day, an American holiday that marks the beginning of the beach season.

Here are the results just released this year

No. 10: Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Mass.

No. 9: Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

No. 8: Beachwalker Park, Kiawah Island, South Carolina

No. 7: Wailea Beach, Maui, Hawaii

No. 6: Coronado Beach, San Diego, California

No. 5: Lighthouse Beach, Buxton, North Carolina

No. 4: Caladesia Island State Park (Dunedin/Clearwater, Florida)

No. 3: Coopers Beach, Southampton, New York

No. 2: Duke Kahanamoku Beach, Oahu, Hawaii

No. 1: St. George Island State Park, Florida Panhandle

Three Hawaii beaches made the list this year. Poipu Beach on Kauai (No. 9) and Wailea Beach on Maui (No. 7) are beaches that even those of us who live on Oahu would love to visit on vacation! The beaches are lined with luxurious hotels and elegant restaurants. The area is lined with luxury hotels and offers an elegant resort atmosphere.

Among these, Duke Kahanamoku Beach took second place. It is located at the westernmost end of Waikiki Beach and stretches right in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The reasons for this award include its location away from the hustle and bustle of the central Waikiki area, and its shallow waters and gentle waves, making it a family-friendly beach for families with children. The Diamond Head view from here is also praised.

This is not enough to make this place attractive, so I decided to take the liberty of adding to it.

(1) Accessible to everyone at the common beach.

Some beaches make you feel guilty if you are not a guest of a nearby hotel, but here, “Everyone is welcome! Whether you are a commoner or a luxury resort guest, you are welcome here! The beach is filled with an aloha-like brightness that says, “Everyone is welcome!

(2) High probability of clear skies

The weather in Hawaii is completely different depending on the area. The mountain side basically gets rain every day, while Waikiki has a relatively high percentage of sunny days. However, even in the vicinity of Waikiki, the weather is slightly different. When it rains in Waikiki today,” “Diamond Head is covered with clouds,” or “Ala Moana is raining,” the beach is often clear.

(3) Beach & palm trees are photogenic

The beach and palm trees are a picture-perfect setting in which to blend in. While the beaches in the center of Waikiki are lined with palm trees along Kalakaua Avenue, here the palm trees are on the beach, stretching skyward. The view is so beautiful that it makes you want to go there every day.

(4) Associated with Duke Kahanamoku

The beach’s name, Duke Kahanamoku, was named after Hawaiian legend Duke Kahanamoku. Duke is a legendary surfer who introduced surfing to the world and was an Olympic gold medalist in swimming. His statue is on Kalakaua Avenue, but he grew up around Kalia Tower in what is now the Hilton Hawaiian Village. That is why this beach is named after him.

(5) You can make use of the hotel in front of you.

The Hilton Hawaiian Village is right behind the hotel, so it’s very convenient. Even if you are not staying at the hotel, you can have breakfast, lunch, or a beer at the restaurant. Or, grab a Frappuccino at Starbucks for a quick bite. You don’t even need to buy food!

(6) Fireworks are set off every Friday.

The Hilton Hawaiian Village sets off fireworks on this beach every Friday at 7:45 p.m. This event has been going on since 1988, and no one can fail to be impressed by the fireworks that light up the night sky over Waikiki for about 10 minutes.

Incidentally, the hotel lagoon right next door is also popular because it is a safe place for children to play.

I know it’s a bit of a snake pit, but I also have a …… local voice. A friend of mine who grew up in Kailua once told me that after the local Lanikai Beach was named “America’s Best Beach,” it became crowded and difficult to get to. While happy that their wonderful beach was recognized, the locals honestly felt a sense of loneliness that the situation had changed. As for what I can do, I will leave the beach with a feeling of gratitude that I will leave the beach even cleaner than when I arrived.
