JAPAN announced that it will add a “wind radar” feature to the iOS version of its Yahoo! Weather app by June; the Android version has already been available since April.
The feature, which allows users to pinpoint wind speed and direction at one-hour intervals from two hours in advance up to 72 hours in the future, is available by launching the Yahoo!
Wind speed and direction are represented by animated lines flowing on the map, and wind speed can be checked using color distribution maps, allowing the user to visually grasp wind conditions. Information from around the world can be referenced, including the occurrence of typhoons. In Japan, wind conditions can be checked at even more detailed locations.
A line graph at the bottom of the screen allows the user to check wind speed and direction at a specified location, and when strong winds are expected, the system alerts the user with expressions such as “very strong winds” or “fierce winds.
Weather and Disaster Engineer and project manager for wind radar, Koji Segawa, recalls, “We started developing this feature because of the danger to ourselves during typhoons, when winds can be very strong.
While this function is beneficial as a countermeasure against such disasters, it could also be useful in everyday situations that are affected by wind, such as marine leisure activities, bicycling, and whether or not to dry laundry.
