Weathernews has added a new radar-style mode, Windflow, to its WeatherNews weather app (Android/iOS version) as a new feature of its rain cloud radar.
This content visualizes the wind around the world on a map based on proprietary wind forecast data, displaying hourly wind direction and wind speed forecasts for up to 72 hours from the present time in a high-resolution 5 km mesh.
The direction of wind flow is represented by stream line animation, and wind strength is represented by color, allowing the user to see at a glance where the wind is strengthening and from which direction it is blowing.
The map can be zoomed in and out freely, and by selecting the current location or an arbitrary point, the wind direction and speed at the selected point can be pinpointed. Because the map covers the entire world, the effects of typhoons and other storms far from Japan can also be monitored.
It is also useful when planning outdoor activities such as fishing, surfing, and camping, as well as for strong winds and storms during October, when typhoons are more likely to occur.
