President Tanaka meets with President Bias of the National Assembly of Mozambique

Posted on 2023-06-15 by Editor in Chief

JICA President Akihiko Tanaka met with Ms. Esperanza Bias, President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique, and members of the ruling and opposition parties in Tokyo on June 7.

At the beginning of the meeting, President Tanaka expressed his condolences to the victims of Cyclone Freddy that struck Mozambique in March, and stated that Japan and Mozambique share many natural disasters such as typhoons, and that Japan would continue to share its experience in natural disaster risk management with Mozambique. He also mentioned that JICA will continue to cooperate with Mozambique’s growth through infrastructure development, including the port of Nacala, and human resource development, etc. Furthermore, in the province of Cabo Delgado, where security is unstable due to the activities of armed groups, JICA will invite participants from the province to participate in training programs conducted in other provinces in order to rebuild destroyed infrastructure facilities and basic administrative services. In addition, he stated that JICA would like to cooperate in the development of human resources in various fields for reconstruction by, for example, inviting participants from the province to participate in training programs conducted by JICA in other provinces in order to rebuild destroyed infrastructure and basic administrative services.

In response, Mr. Bias, President of the National Assembly, expressed his gratitude for JICA’s cooperation over the years. He pointed out the importance of natural disaster countermeasures, infrastructure development such as the Nacala Corridor development, and human resource development that will lead to economic growth, and expressed hope that Japanese companies will be encouraged to enter Mozambique. He also expressed his hope that Japanese companies will be encouraged to expand their business operations in Mozambique. He thanked the Province of Cabo Delgado for providing training outside the province, and expressed his hope that the government will support the reconstruction of people’s lives in the field, as the security situation in the province is improving.

Both parties agreed to continue to deepen cooperation for the development of Mozambique.
